Meet the Team – Head Cook

Hi, my name is Mickey Slakey, and I’m the Head Cook at Black Diamond Camp (BDC)! I first stumbled across BDC online in the spring of 2019 and ended up moving from California to spend that summer as a Summer Staff Counselor. It was my first real taste of camping ministry—and that summer opened my eyes to just how impactful camp can be for people from all walks of life.

That summer also brought something unexpected: I met my now-wife, Mya, who was serving as a Summer Activities Staff. After getting married in 2021, we found ourselves back at Camp in 2022, this time serving full-time. I started out in the Guest Services Department as an Event Coordinator, a role I held from summer 2022 through fall 2024.

When the Head Cook position became available, I jumped at the opportunity—excited to learn more about cooking, food service, and how the kitchen plays a role in shaping our guests’ experience. One of the things I love most about working at Camp is seeing how guests are able to slow down, be present, and encounter God in powerful ways during their time here. And in the kitchen, there’s nothing quite like feeding a bunch of hungry campers after a full day of adventure!

As we head into a new season, we’ve experienced some changes in the kitchen—from new team members and menu items to updated products and systems. We would be so grateful for your prayers as we gear up to serve thousands of guests this summer! Specifically, we’re asking for prayer that our kitchen equipment runs smoothly and reliably—we’ve had a few bumps in the offseason, and we’re hoping for consistency as we head into our busiest months.

Thank you for taking the time to read a bit of my story. Your support and prayers make a difference as we continue to serve, grow, and create a place where lives are transformed through the ministry of camp!!
