Connecting through Adventure
When challenges arise, what is your first instinct? Is it to take it out on others around you, to pretend like everything is fine, or to feel ashamed, turn inward, and shut the world out? What would happen differently if you found yourself in the presence of someone who compassionately holds space for you to voice what is troubling you and reflect back the love and warmth of Christ?
This past summer, a particular group visiting Rainier Camp & Retreat Center consisted of youth from all walks of life. Alongside five guides from Peak 7 Adventures, the teenagers were led through a technical skills course while traversing Mt. Baker’s awe-inspiring beauty. During their time in the Alpine, they discussed love and the different ways it can show up in our lives. Connecting through adventure created a unique environment where vulnerability flourished.
With walls coming down amongst the group, three teenagers opened up and expressed how they got into trouble with the law before the trip. Taylor King, Peak 7 Program Director, lent empathy, genuine curiosity, and encouragement to the teens as they processed what they had done. Taylor explained, “This created some interesting space to be able to support them and speak into their lives in a much more meaningful way.”
For Peak 7 and the youth in their care, Rainier Camp was a welcome sight after long days in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. The peaceful atmosphere, the idyllic beauty of the grounds, and Christ-like hospitality were conducive to further reflection and deepening connections within the group. After the trip, Taylor drove the three teenagers home and watched as the teens hugged and prayed together about turning themselves in and taking responsibility for their behavior.
With a shared vision of bringing youth into God’s wild creation, Rainier Camp & Retreat Center partners with Peak 7 Adventures, providing transformational experiences for the 216+ at-risk youth they serve during the summer season.
